Podcast Goal Setting in 2021 – Set Your Podcast Up for Success

Are you starting a podcast in 2021? Congrats! First and foremost, celebrate yourself, and get ready for a fun adventure. Now, I know you’re here because you’re interested in doing some good old-fashioned podcast goal setting. So in this post, we’ll be covering practical goals you can set for your podcast this year. Let’s do this!

Goal 1: Launch Your Podcast

First thing’s first, if you haven’t launched your podcast yet, make that your first goal! If you want to learn more about how to start a podcast, you can check out my Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Podcast.

Goal 2: Interview someone you’re really excited for

If you’re like me, then your first guests are people you know in real life. I highly recommend this strategy because chances are, you know some pretty great people that would make great guests! Even so, I’d recommend you set the goal to interview someone you don’t know that you’d be stoked for. People like talking about themselves, and you never know who will say yes!

Goal 3: Get your first 25 reviews

Podcast reviews are important for a few reasons. They provide social proof that people like your show, and activity around your podcast can help it perform better within the podcast algorithms. And they feel good! It’s validating to hear people are resonating with your show, and this can be great motivation on the days that you don’t feel like recording.

Something to note is that in my experience, people are review resistant. If you want reviews, ya gotta ask for them!

Goal 4: Consistently publish new episodes every week for 6 months

Look, podcasting is a long game. Here’s the truth: if you don’t plan on posting a new episode every single week (even when you don’t feel like it) then you’re not going to.

Taking breaks is important, but I’d encourage you to plan on posting consistently for six months and reevaluating from there.

Goal 5: Buy a microphone

I’m all about starting with what you have. And if you have to start your podcast on your phone, then my friend you do what you gotta do! However, set the goal to buy a podcasting mic this year. At the end of the day audio quality matters a lot when it comes to your podcast, and they don’t have to break the bank!

And again, if you want to hear about my favorite microphone, I do talk about it in my Beginner’s Guide to Podcasting in 2021.

Goal 6: Become a more confident host

The truth is, this will happen naturally. If you’re like me, by the time you record your 10th episode, you’ll go back and think, “Woah. I sound totally different!” It’s super rewarding to see (and hear!) that growth, and I’m sure that you will become a more confident host this year. Get ready to cross this one of your list in no time!

Goal 7: Be a guest on someone else’s podcast

Being a guest on someone else’s podcast is SO fun. The podcasting community is so supportive, and it is a blast to have the roles reversed. It’s also a great way to grow your audience and build your network. It’s a win win!
